Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Bishop Edmond Carmody

Bishop Edmond Carmody enters Corpus Christi Cathedral in 2004 in a procession to begin the Christmas Eve midnight Mass.

Job Well Done Good and Faithful Servant

Bishop Edmond Carmody came to the Diocese of Corpus Christi on March 17, 2000.  Bishop Carmody, who was born in Ireland, will stay in Corpus Christi.

He wants to teach at John Paul II High School, a school he helped start. He is certified in Texas to teach history, Spanish, or geography and to work as a counselor. But if there’s no room for another teacher, he’ll still be there.

“If nothing else I’ll be planting trees, shrubs and doing yard work,” he said. “The school was my prayer, it was needed.”

In October, 2003, Carmody worked to open Mother Teresa Day Shelter, which now has served thousands of homeless people, and he has expanded the provisions of Catholic Charities.

He has been a constant voice in the fight against diabetes, often leading prayers at annual fundraising walks to help prevent the disease that affects 40,000 Nueces County residents.

He loves people first, said Mary Sedberry, Carmody’s personal secretary for 18 years.

A wonderful teacher for all, she called him.

Too kind, she said.

“But he’s always said that no one ever left the church,” she said, “because the priest was too kind.”
